Book Review – Obsidian (Lux #1)

Hey! I haven’t been on in a while due to school work and partially being lazy because I haven’t got the hang of blogging yet.

Never, ever going to write deep posts anymore… you know why? I sound like a 9 year old sluzza who think she’s got it tough…. *eye roll*

Title: Obsidian

Series: Lux

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

How am I meant to start this review off? OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG….. It’s just so good. In fact I think it might be my favourite book this year. Whilst my friends are going around reading books about reality like ‘Anna and the French Kiss’, I’m reading this and going into la-la land. Usually, I’m shy with what I read, I’m not reading porn or anything but with this book I just told my friends: yup it’s about aliens, no it’s not like E.T., conversations usually go like this:

Friend: Hey Kelly, did you enjoy [insert book name]?

Me: Yeah, it was actually good. What book are you reading now?

Friend: [insert book name], it’s the sequel to [insert book name]…

Me: Ahhhh….

Friend: You?

Me: Obsidian, it’s like a really, really good book, like my favourite good book.

Friend: Oh really? What’s it about?

Me: Aliens,  cool people, sci-fi…

Friends: o_O….. okay…

As you can see, THAT happens, so I’m left moping in the corner at night, crying “WHY DOESN’T ANYONE LIKE THE TYPE OF BOOKS THAT I READ?”  and then rocking myself back and forth, yeah that’s right bitchez many things I loved about the book, many things, so let’s start with the characters.

First of all, the main character, Katy Swartz was so amusing and funny! I loved the commentary and the sassy quips she throws at the other characters, unlike some characters ahem Bella Swan ahem (don’t hate on me, I actually used to like Twilight)  she has a backbone and actually has the guts to do something without the love interest always standing holding her hand whilst doing it. Applause to Armentrout for writing the main character seem like an actual teenager and not the weird ass ones who sit at home reading Wuthering Heights 16 times (some teens might like that book but c’mon, you don’t read it like a dozen times . Oh, have I mentioned the hilarious narration? I believe I have, it’s hilarious, it makes the book so much more better, but I guess it’s just me, if you choose to stick with you’d find out that the majority of the books I read have heroines that are either strong (mentally or physically), sassy, sarcastic or just all of them. I just can’t handle weak heroines or heroes, otherwise throughout the book, I’d be tempted to scream and throw the book, scream PUSSY at it, stomp on it and then burn it whilst manically laughing.  Katy is cool. I wish I had Katy as a friend, but alas she’s a character…. The bad thing about Katy *gasp* I guess, would be that she’s a typical YA heroine, you know the type? Yes, the type where they’re beautiful and they don’t know it….. *rolls eyes* just for once, why can’t the girl be pretty and  know it, although then people would be all like: “whatta slut!”, *sigh* you can never win….

I’m sure I looked like a serial killer. At least now we knew I was too weak to do any damage

The Black twins (or ……)  no, I’m not being racist, their last name is Black…. are possibly my favourite siblings in any series I’ve ever read about. Daemon Black, the love interest, alien, cool ass guy, is the typical bad-boy-jerk-swoon-worthy-hawt-underneath-all-caring-guy-loves-family-really-annoying-to-the-heroine. Even though, he’s like that I still can’t help but like him, it has something to do with the way he was written as, just funny. I love the interactions between Daemon and Katy, it’s just blerghhhhh (I can’t think of any words awesome enough to be put together to describe it).

I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. “The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness

Dee Black, is Daemon’s twin who is hyper. Yeah, she and Katy quickly get acquainted and soon become BFFs, arghhhhhh words can’t describe how much coolness Dee is…. I don’t know how Armentrout does it, but she made Dee likeable even though she cries a little bit too much to my liking and is a little bit too happy and hyper but Dee Black is totes my favs character

The plot line is NOT A CLICHÉD YA NOVEL… I mean it’s not everyday you have aliens in a YA book, usually it’s a vampire, fallen angel or a shape shifter of some kind. Usually, I don’t like Sci-Fi, actually I’ve never liked Sci-Fi but this book actually introduced me to the genre, so as a taster of the genre, it was perfect for me to get into said genre, which is why I’ve started to read Sci-Fi more often instead of reading Paranormal and Fantasy. The story doesn’t follow the usual: love triangle – couple break up- teenage angsting – girl breaks down – guy jumps in and fixes everything – couple gets back together. Nuh-uh, nup, no, nahh, there’s an actual story line instead of some sappy love story and the girl doesn’t instantly give in to the wondrous charm of the main guy.

Overall, the book is fab and I recommend you check it out as Armentrout has written a fabulous introduction into a series that I can’t wait to read in the future.

RATING: 9.5/10

Who says they aren’t?

When you’re trying to help someone and you think they appreciate it and then BAM all of a sudden you find out that they wanted to punch you in the face when you did that.. yeah that’s what happened to me.

Of course friendships, would be complicated, who says they aren’t?

Sure, I’m a teenager, I might not know what I’m talking about, heck I’ve only been living for a decade and a bit. Teens go through a lot of friends, from preschool, to now, you lose and gain friends, you might befriend people that you have a lot in common with or non at all, you could befriend someone just because they make you laugh. I know I have a wide variety of friends, sure some I might go out with, others I just talk to when I see them at school. I know that’s normal, they come and go but some stick by you from the start.

I don’t know about you , but I never got experience that, I’ve never had friends that I have known since I was in preschool or since prep. I’ve made friends, left them and befriended new people. I guess people with those type of friends are lucky and I envy them.

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art… It has no survival value; rather is one of those things that give value to survival

– C.S Lewis

What motivated me to write this post is that, a few weeks ago one of my friends in my class left for the Philippines. I miss her dearly, but she had a close friend in my class. On the day the girl left for the Philippines, my friend was acting a bit strange. So I tried comforting her, a lot of people came up and asked where the other girl went and when told the truth would snort and say things like ‘forever alone’. At first I didn’t notice, but when I looked properly, my friend looked like on the verge of crying. I asked her if she was alright because she looked a bit sad. She replied she was ok and I left it at that because I didn’t want to pry and I also respected the fact that she didn’t want to share anything. Fine. Until, last night, when  I was on Twitter (yeah I’m new to it too as well as blogging) and saw she had a blog. Excited to have another friend that had a blog as well, I went on it and saw that regular posts about her life but when I went on one of her other posts, I read about her wanting to punch my face because I asked if she was ok? Really? People said ‘forever alone’ and when someone tries to comfort you, you want to beat them up?

I understand that that might be her way of coping with things. I’m not going to hold a grudge, I’m not even angry with her. You might as well forgive and forget…

Some friends might not hang around for long, so might as well cherish your time with them longer. Through hard/fun/sad/joyous times

Ze Parte 1

I’m only going to do a bit, because i’m lazy I don’t want to bore non-existent readers with lots of words and someone’s opinion that people are gonna go fuqdisshit on….

So here’s part 1:

Obviously, books are really expensive or the places I buy from are obviously ripping me off , so I don’t really have an abundance of books that I would like to have but I’ll show you them:

(Thank god I got the Australian edition, the other editions look like shit crap)

So basically,  the series is set in medieval Europe and is centred around a girl called Wynter. The first book The Poison Throne which I don’t have, woe is me… *sigh* is about Wynter coming back after 5 years from not being home, and finding out her home country is quite different, like everything’s now emo and depressing crappy and not what she remembered 5 years ago in my opinion, I think that’s just stupid, I mean lady, you’ve been away for how long? 5 YEARS! Of course things have got to change…

So, Wynter then finds out Prince Alberon, her beloved friend is missing, more than that he’s the crowned prince, not only that but now there’s this ‘Bloody Machine’ that has ‘untold destructive power’  shits going downnnnnn

So it’s now up to Razi (Prince Alberon’s half brother and a bastard child), Christopher, a mysterious dude and Wynter to save the day.. POWERANGERS help restore things back to normal.

In the next two books,  The Crowded Shadows and The Rebel Prince, Wynter is now out of the castle and on her Poweranger adventure, with Razi and Christopher. Obviously I’m not going into detail since if you decide to read this, I’d be spoiling it for you, I mean I once accidently spoiled the Hunger Games for my friend and she went all apeshit on me… but that’s another story for another time. What I’m saying, I don’t want people to go apeshit on me…..

So yeah, I love this trilogy even though it’s not my favourite but I love how the main character can stand up for herself. Although she’s not like a *kickass* heroine, at least she’s headstrong and can think unlike some dumbshits in books . The pacing of the book is great and the plot is interesting, you won’t get bored at all.

I’d recommend this series to people interested in adventure books I guess, and romance. Obviously, check out The Moorehawke Trilogy  if I managed to convince you that it’s worth your time!

I’d try and find a cool quote (which there are heaps from the trilogy) but I can’t be bothered.

Oh my… Tell you what, Razi, swap places, will you? I do so love a woman who knows what to do with her hands.

TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT so don’t leave me

ZE ADVENTURES OF ROSE HATHAWAY!!! Ok, so basically it’s a vampire series but not shit like Twilight  where there’s Moroi – vampires that don’t kill and join ze darkside  and Strigoi – vampires from said darkside, you’re either turned or you go by choice, which means you kill when you drink. Then there’s dhampirs -have Moroi and  half anything except animals coz that’d be wrong

Ok, so the series is about Rose Hathaway a dhampir that’s best friends with Vasilisa (Lissa) the Dragonmir Princess (one of the most powerful royal families, and she’s last in line)  on the run, at the start of the book they get caught and have to go back to St. Vladimir’s Academy. A place where Moroi learn magic (because they can) and normal education and where Dhampirs learn to protect the Moroi.

Obviously, I’m not going to go on about the other books, because I’d spoil it….

Ok. I LURVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEE THIS SERIES SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has everything I want, from action, to AWESUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM heroine, funny dialogue, not overpowering romance, that ruins the book. The plot is constantly interesting, although some parts may be cliché, you wouldn’t get bored with a feisty heroine. Although some characters get on my mind, the protagonist, Rose is always constantly funny and hilarious, I mean, she’s not trying to be funny or anything but the situations and her actions result in interesting and funny banters between her and Dimitri (the cool as love interest). So, I recommend this series to people who love paranormal, adventure, romance, action, fantasy readers.  I promise you, you won’t get bored, even if you don’t end up liking the series. WOOT WOOT! Vampire Academy.

By the way, my name’s Rose Hathaway. I’m seventeen years old, training to protect and kill vampires, in love with a completely unsuitable guy, and have a best friend whose weird magic could drive her crazy.
Hey, no one said high school was easy.

The sad thing is that I don’t have the last book, so excuse me while I cry here in the corner…..

Fallen’s about a girl named Lucinda (Luce) who get’s sent to reform school or was it juvie? not sure… for various reason you shall find out…. anyways at reform school, she sees a kid named Daniel and he’s the hawtest thing she’s ever seen and our dear protagonist, Luce, immediately feels this deep connection towards said guy, and feels like she knows him,  unfortunately he flips her off… *rolls eyes*

Luce now is determined and sets out to find out the truth….. the way I described it makes like it sound like another crappy YA book that you’ve all read before right?  I’m actually not putting that much effort into this series anymore…

Ok. So The Fallen Series. Well for this series, it was great and all, at the start, got bored in the second book, piqued my interest in the third book, wanted to scream and burn at the book in the last one. Some readers might actually like the whole series, and I can see why, but for me it didn’t cut it. It was so interesting at the start then SPLAT too much monologue and explaining and I basically flipped through the second book… I really don’t have much to say, the books were entertaining and a light read but I don’t really like it nor do I really hate it either…..  If you’re interested then get of yo ass  gee  and read Ze Fallen Seriez

You know everyone loves to hate a happy pair of lovebirds.

So there’s part one….. If I‘m not lazy  have time which I probably do I’ll try and write reviews on the books I’ve read….. My first review would probably be Obisidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout which is now my probably favourite book and will probably remain that way for a long long time.

Hey Guys!
